Core Professional Training on
its first training series in Canada, PHAP is pleased to offer a set of
two standard three-day Core Trainings on Humanitarian Law and Policy -
one in Ottawa (6-8 April, in English) and one in Montreal the following
week (11-13 April, in French) - followed by a two-day Thematic Workshop
on Engaging with Non-State Actors: Opportunities and Challenges (14-15 April, in Montreal, in English).

Course fee: 900 euros
(with possibility of tuition assistance for professionals accepted to the Core Training working for local and national civil society organizations in developing countries)

The Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy is tailored to meet the needs of practitioners and policymakers. Diplomats, government officials, professionals from non-governmental organizations, and United Nations staff will find the curriculum designed to address the legal, policy, and practical challenges encountered in humanitarian operations in situations of armed conflict. Others with substantial interest and relevant experience, including members of the military, journalists, applied researchers, and policy analysts, are also encouraged to apply.
Planned sessions include the following (among others):
* Qualification of Armed Conflict
* Protection of Civilians
* Humanitarian Access
* Conduct of Hostilities
* Direct Participation in Hostilities
* International Humanitarian Law, Criminal Law and Enforcement
* War Crimes, Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity

Those attending the Core Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy in Ottawa in April 2011 are also encouraged to attend the two-day Thematic Workshop on Non-State Actors in Montreal on 14-15 April, which will also be conducted in English (see details below). If you are interested in also attending the Thematic Workshop, please simply indicate such on your Core Training application form - there is no need to apply separately for the two events.
